TRIESTE – Six ports in the North Adriatic (Ancona, Ravenna, Venice, Trieste, Koper and Rijeka), with specific reference to containers and related shipping lines, were analyzed by Aiom (Agenzia imprenditoriale operatori marittimi) of Trieste concerning what is happening in the first half of 2021.
In particular, after a division into two groups according to the reference market, the most important issues were highlighted, starting with the rivalry between Trieste and Koper.
When asked how the recovery is going, Aiom responds with an articulate analysis that explains some data that cannot always be interpreted at first reading. As already mentioned on these pages by AdriaPorts, Koper is growing compared to Trieste, but the figures must be read carefully.
According to Aiom, there are signs of increased volumes in the individual ports, albeit with alternating variables. In the container sector, a different logic of cargo distribution emerges from the primary shipowning alliances: minor repositioning of empties, more direct traffic, less transhipment.
In the liquid and solid bulk sector, in addition to the persistence of some effects of the pandemic, the first signs of the “green transition” can be seen: less oil, less bulk raw materials (coal, minerals, etc.), more semi-finished products imported from third countries. In general cargo, the Ro-Ro mode is reaffirmed in intra-Mediterranean relations, with an increase in intermodality.
